The significance of inclusivity in Physical Education

Physical education an opportunity for all to be involved and included.

Inclusion a necessity for the PE curriculum

Every student should have the same access, opportunities and given assurance they are able to be apart of all PE lessons, activities and clubs that their school offers. No student should feel excluded or inept to due their ability. As physical education aims to develop movement, skills and qualities that all students will need to progress and carry into adulthood to ensure a healthy active lifestyle.

The Positive Developments Inclusivity Creates

When PE lessons and sport led activities include all it can allow children with physical disabilities and poor mental health to develop in a number of positive ways:

Mental

  • Raised self-esteem and confidence
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Improves mood
  • Better cognitive function

Physical

  • Development of core motor skills
  • Improving physical endurance and fitness
  • Spatial awareness

Social

  • Fulfilment from taking part, sense of satisfaction
  • Feeling valued as a member of a group
  • Collaborative learning
  • Communication development

The reasons above reinforce the importance of physical education but more importantly an inclusive form that provides an array of benefits that contribute to pupils’ general wellbeing.

Ways to make PE more inclusive

At KCS we have provided you with some options on how to get your every pupil enjoying and involved in physical activities that can occur on the field, playground or in the classroom.

A bonding ring is a great place to start, as it brings pupils together, and can allow them to be active and moving whilst socially developing simultaneously.

Secondly a parachute, a great tool to provide students with the opportunity to develop hand eye coordination, balance but also social skills. Such as sharing, communication and collaboration.

Furthermore, KCS provide a range of products that are adaptations of original sports, but allow all to take part. No level of physical fitness or skill is required. Kurling a form of curling, yet it can be played indoors on any smooth, flat surface. This sport is recognised and commended by the Disability Sport England, therefore KCS wanted to ensure our range of goods offers products that allow disabled students to still be active and have fun.

In addition to Kurling, KCS also offer Boccia another disability sport. That provides all ages and abilities an opportunity to partake and enjoy exercise. Similar to bowls the sport is played whilst all participants are sat, there for pupils who are wheelchair users can be included.
